Solar Suitcases Save Lives
When I first heard about the solar suitcase I thought it was just another really inventive new solar gadget! Then when I heard the story of how solar suitcases can save lives, I was SO inspired!
Hal Aronson and Laura Stachel of Berkley, California are a husband and wife team who were inspired while doing research in Nigeria. Laura is an obstetrician and saw so many women dying in childbirth because of the simple lack of adequate electricity or lighting in the hospitals. Imagine a doctor trying to deliver a baby or do surgery in the dark!
Hal used his 25 years of experience with solar technology to develop a simple solar suitcase that can provide up to 30 hours of continual lighting. The suitcases are made in such a way that even relatively untrained people can do the wiring, so that they can be used in many different locations.
The solar suitcases are being used in many locations and were most recently used in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and they were sent along with the medical teams so that they could be put to use immediately.
Hal and Laura founded founded We Care Solar, Women's Emergency Communication and Reliable Electricity, in 2008. Please visit their site to learn more about their Solar Suitcases.
